Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: What is Certification?

At this time there is no recognized national certification and only a few states offer credentialing for animal massage therapy. The only certifications available are those offered by schools for having completed their courses. This documentation is proof that you have satisfied the course requirements.

FAQ: Is There Accreditation?

Individual schools can apply for and be awarded accreditation. PetMassage is recognized by the NCBTMB (National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork) as continuing education provider #285813-00. It is accepted by the ABMP, the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals and by the AMTA, The American Massage Therapy Association.

FAQ: When I complete the workshops, am I a "Certified PetMassage Therapist?"

No. At this time, there is no such title. Using this title would falsely indicate that you have the knowledge and experience to use our techniques as therapy. This might conflict with the laws in your state. There are several states whose Veterinary Scopes of Practice restrict what you may do and claim you do with animals. Please check with your state legislature and/or State Veterinary Licensing Board for regulations. Also contact www.iaamb.org.

In all states, it is permissible for pet guardians to perform soft tissue (muscle, skin and connective tissue) manipulations on their dogs for therapy. Our students learn to teach PetMassage to dog-owners so they can use our techniques to take better care of their pets at home. We would prefer that you use the tear "PetMassage Provider" or, after you have completed the Advanced Workshop, a "PetMassage Instructor".
